The Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) conducts supervision of fishing vessels of 15 metres in overall length and upwards in order to ensure that vessels are constructed, operated and equipped in accordance with the legislation currently in force.

Following the supervision, the NMA issues a trading certificate with a period of validity of 4 years. The certificate is a confirmation of the fact that the NMA has carried out an inspection of the safety level of the vessel, and gives the vessel permission to sail based on this inspection.
