The training institute must be approved by the Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) in order to offer safety training for fishermen. The NMA also approves the curriculum for these courses.

The NMA has approved the new curriculum for the course “Basic safety training for fishermen”. This curriculum is applicable from 1 July 2013 and replaces the former curriculum which had been prepared and approved by The Advisory body for safety training of fishermen, cf. § 3 of Regulation of 10 February 1989 no. 88 concerning safety training for fishermen.

The new curriculum has been prepared by a work group consisting of representatives from the safety centers and the fishermen’s organizations.

From 1 July 2013, the new curriculum will be applicable for those who would like to offer safety training for fishermen. You find the curriculum on NMA’s homepage.

From the same date, all those who offer such training must be approved by the Norwegian Maritime Authority in accordance with the requirements of § 14 in Regulation of 22 December 2011 No. 1523 (NMA website).

The Norwegian Maritime Authority will attempt to process the applications for approval as soon as possible after they have been received. Normally however, you should allow for a processing period of at least 4 weeks for these applications, starting the day the application is registered with the NMA.

Documentation required as attachment to the application will depend on whether or not the training institute has a valid approval from the NMA (cf. § 14 in Regulation of 22 December 2011 No. 1523).

For institutes with valid approval, the documentation required by the curriculum will have to be submitted. For instance a course schedule, guidelines for the course instructors and a list of relevant qualifications held by the course instructors.

The institutes that do NOT have a valid approval, will in addition to the above mentioned requirements, have to submit a complete application for approval pursuant to the requirements of § 14 in Regulation of 22 December 2011 No. 1523. Information about the required enclosures to such an application can be found on NMA’s website.
